El Stewart Detention Center, ubicado en la localidad de Lumpkin, Georgia, es una de las instalaciones de detención de inmigrantes más grandes de Estados Unidos. Allí se encuentra alojado Agustín Gentile, un argentino de 31 años con residencia legal que espera una audiencia judicial que definirá su futuro. La expulsión es un escenario posible.

El centro Stewart es operado por la empresa privada CoreCivic para el Servicio de Control de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés). Es una dependencia con detenidos exclusivamente masculinos, con una capacidad para 1.700 personas. En el pasado ha sido objeto de denuncias sobre sus condiciones internas.

Según publicó inicialmente The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, y pudo confirmar LANACION de fuentes cercanas al caso, Gentile es un argentino que vive en EE.UU. desde los 13 años y es padre de dos niños estadounidenses.

El inmigrante fue detenido el 14 de abril en Raleigh, Carolina del Norte, y trasladado dos días después a Stewart, a unos 850 kilómetros. Su detención se produjo al regresar de un viaje al exterior en febrero, cuando en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Ángeles le confiscaron su tarjeta de residencia (green card) y su pasaporte argentino debido a una condena menor por lesiones en California en 2020, caso por el cual recibió libertad condicional y que fue cerrado en 2023.

De acuerdo a las declaraciones de Gentile a sus padres, Débora Rey y Martín Verdi, las condiciones en Stewart son duras. Según publicó el periódico de Georgia mencionado, el argentino describió situaciones de hacinamiento, con personas durmiendo en el suelo, y luces que permanecen encendidas durante toda la noche, dificultando el descanso.

Además, Gentile ha reportado dificultades para acceder a productos de higiene básicos y que su alimentación se basa principalmente en sopas instantáneas adquiridas en la proveeduría del centro, ya que las comidas proporcionadas serían, según su testimonio, difíciles de ingerir.

“A veces me llama y ni siquiera sabe qué día o qué hora es”, comentó su madre a The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Gentile también les habría dicho que, en su sector, “es la única persona que tiene papeles. Todos los demás son indocumentados”.
